Understanding the Influence of Entertainment on Our Thoughts and Beliefs

Let your eyes look straight ahead; fix your gaze directly before you. Give careful thought to the paths for your feet and be steadfast in all your ways. Do not turn to the right or the left; keep your foot from evil. Proverbs 4:25-27

This verse is a guide, telling us to focus on what's good and right, like driving straight and not getting distracted. Imagine it's like driving a car, we should look straight ahead, not getting distracted by things on the side. We need to think carefully about where we are going and stay on the right path. This means we should avoid doing things that are wrong or harmful. We need to think about where we are going and avoid wrong things. It's a reminder that what we watch can shape who we become, like our eyes are windows to our souls. So, be cautious about what we allow into our lives.

Let’s consider some questions and explore answers from the Bible;

Let's take a closer look at where we are right now. Are we letting the things from the world fill up our thoughts and feelings, or are we taking time to feed our spirits by studying God's Word every day? Are we allowing Holy Spirit to guide us and help us see the things that God wants us to, see?

What is the purpose of our eyes? The Bible tells us in Matthew 6:22 that "The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light." This implies that our eyes should seek the light of God's truth and goodness.

Worldly Content vs. God's Word: In Colossians 3:2, it says, "Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth." This suggests that we should focus on things that are godly and not just on worldly matters.

What is the role of the Holy Spirit in our lives? In John 14:26, Jesus speaks of the Holy Spirit, saying, "But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you." This means the Holy Spirit can teach us and help us understand God's wisdom.

So, it's important for us to choose what we fill our hearts and minds with, prioritizing God's Word, and inviting the Holy Spirit to guide us in understanding God's truth.

In the New Testament, there's a story about Jesus helping a man who couldn't see in John 9. This story is like a special event because it's not just about fixing the man's eyes but also about making him understand important things about God. When Jesus made the blind man see again, it was like a light turning on inside him. He didn't just see with his eyes, but he also realized that Jesus was really special, like the Son of God. It's like having a double miracle – seeing the world with your eyes and understanding God in your heart. This story shows us how powerful Jesus' miracles are, not just in the physical sense but also in a deeper, spiritual way.

This story teaches us that Jesus can help us see things clearly, not only with our eyes but also in our hearts and minds. It's like having a special understanding about life and God. So, we should try to let Jesus' wisdom and goodness show us the way in our everyday lives. It's like following a bright light that leads us in the right direction.

The Bible teaches us to focus on good and heavenly things, as Colossians 3:2 teaches us “set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth”. This means we should think about things that are pure, beautiful, and praiseworthy, just like Philippians 4:8 mentions. So, the Bible guides us to use our thoughts for positive and uplifting purposes, not just for ourselves but also for others.

The big lesson we learned today is that we need to protect our hearts and minds from things that can hurt us. We should look for God's wisdom, like a bright light, to guide us. Our eyes can change the way we think and act, so we should be careful about what we pay attention to. It's like choosing what we look at with care, because it can affect how we behave.

In today's world, filled with many distractions, teachers, church leaders, and parents have a vital role in guiding children. To set a positive example, we should select content that aligns with our faith and values. It's important to discuss with our children why it's crucial to choose wholesome things to read and watch. Additionally, we can teach them to seek assistance from the Holy Spirit and read the Bible every day. Encourage them to pray daily, asking God to allow the Holy Spirit to work within us, helping us see what is pure and in accordance with God's will. This way, we can nurture their spiritual growth and understanding.

Let’s pray. Heavenly Father, help us guard our hearts and minds by controlling what we watch and what we expose ourselves to. Open our eyes to your truth and light. May we teach our children the same, and may the Holy Spirit guide our vision. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
