Love Never Fails

God's guidance is valuable in all circumstances

God's guidance is valuable in all circumstances

He said to his men, “The LORD forbid that I should do such a thing to my master, the LORD's anointed, to lay a hand on him, for he is the LORD's anointed. (1 Samuel 24:7)

One of Aesop's fable is about a dying lion. The lion had reached the end of his days and lay sick to death at the door of his cave, begging for breath. The animals, his subjects, surrounded him and drew closer as he became more and more helpless. When they saw him on the verge of death, they said to themselves, "Now is the time to pay off the old grudges." The story ends with all of the animals doing whatever they could do to take their revenge.

The world loves to take revenge. Even the animals have the same distinctiveness. The story of King Saul goes in the same way, David before becoming a king got a chance to kill the Lord's anointed one, Saul. Although the people of his army encouraged him to take Saul's life. David, on the other hand, stopped listening to their men's advice since he knew killing his master resulted in murdering the Lord's anointed. David learned at this time of distress how God's guidance is valuable in all circumstances. As a result, he never believed the voices of his men, no matter how convincing they appeared to be. There may have been hundreds of grudges in him towards King Saul. Still, David has faith in the Lord. Due to David's action, God prospered him and he made him honorable before King Saul. Despite having a chance to murder Saul, David killed the old grudges.

Old grudges had distorted the Torah's teaching during Jesus' time. The old grudges were when Jews and Samaritans stopped liking one another. However, Jesus said to the teacher of the Law, "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and soul and strength and mind" and "Love your neighbor as yourself" (Luke 10:27). In other words, Jesus taught them that the way to forget past fights is to love one another rather than having a fractured mind to seek revenge. The Cross of Christ is the flow of love that could be seen through the crucifixion of Christ. The whole drama of Jesus' redemption demonstrates such love of Christ for us. The love of Christ demands the same love, wherein our cup of love should be overflowed through the love of Christ so that the world can see the love of Christ in us and through us.

Many times, in our relations the old grudges take the place of fight, and we forget that we all are made in the image and likeness of God. What does this image and likeness mean, it means the same moral affinities God has; the character of God, we should have. On the other hand, likeness means that the mission of God we should have to be partakers in the same mission.

Let's pray that the cup of love must overflow through us so that the face of Christ can be seen in this world. Let's pray God that we come before you to ask you humbly to forget about our past fights and be partakers of your love, we love in the same way as Jesus loved and loves this world. So that through your love and kindness people may see your love in us and through us. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen
