If we live, we live for the Lord, and if we die, we die for the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord. Romans 14:8

This verse is teaching us that our lives are dedicated to the Lord. It means that when we are alive, we should live in a way that pleases and honors God. And even when we pass away, we still belong to the Lord. In simple words, it reminds us that our purpose in life is to serve and follow God, and this purpose continues even after we die. It's a way of saying that our connection with God is constant, whether we are here on Earth or with Him in eternity. Our existence is not by chance; it has a special reason. It means that everything we do, we should do while thinking about the Lord. Whether we are alive or have passed away, we always belong to the Lord. This means that our lives have a special meaning and that we should live them in a way that pleases God.

The Bible consistently teaches us about our purpose in God's plan. In the Old Testament, Ecclesiastes 12:13 says, "Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep His commandments, for this is the duty of all mankind." This reinforces the idea that our primary duty is to serve God, whether in life or death.

Let’s questions ourself and then find answers from the Bible:

Why has God put us on this earth?

God put us on Earth because He has a special plan for us. In the Bible, Ephesians 2:10 tells us that God created us to do good things that bring Him glory. This means our job is to love God and help others. It's like God has prepared important tasks for each of us, and when we do these good things, we are doing what God wanted us to do. Our main purpose is to show love to God and the people around us. This is why we are here.

Can't God call His people to heaven after the work of Christ without us?

Yes, God can call people to heaven without our help, but He chooses to involve us in His divine plan to spread His love and truth. God desires to work through us, and when we actively share our faith and live according to His teachings, we participate in His redemptive plan. In 1 Corinthians 3:9, it says, “For we are co-workers in God’s service; you are God’s field, God’s building." This verse highlights our partnership with God in His work.

What's our role as believers?

As believers, our role is to be God's ambassadors. This means we represent God and His message in the world. In 2 Corinthians 5:20, it says, "We are therefore Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making His appeal through us." We are to share the message of God's love, forgiveness, and reconciliation with others and bring glory to Him through our lives.

The story of Timothy, a young follower of the apostle Paul, demonstrates above verse. Timothy's life shows us what Romans 14:8 means. He spent his life serving the Lord with guidance from Paul. Timothy went with Paul on trips to tell people about Jesus and helped start Christian groups. He was very faithful and stayed committed to God, even when things were tough. Timothy's life helped the early Christian Church grow. This reminds us that our job on Earth is to serve God, just like Timothy did, whether we are alive or have passed away. We are here for God's purpose. In Philippians 2:19-22, Paul speaks highly of Timothy's dedication to serving the Lord and others.

The way Jesus, our Lord, lived, died, and rose from the dead is a great example of what Romans 14:8 means. He did everything according to what His Father (God) wanted. His life, death, and coming back to life showed how dedicated He was to God's plan. As people who believe in Him, we are like bright lights showing others the way to God, and we add God's goodness and love to the world, like salt adds flavor. So, we should always act and speak in a way that shows God's love and truth to everyone.

We are called to be like a shining light in the darkness and the salt that adds flavor to the world. This idea comes from Jesus' teachings in Matthew 5:13-16. He encourages us to let our good deeds and actions be like a light that guides others to God and to bring the flavor of God's love and grace into the world. Our conduct and words should reflect God's goodness and truth.

The Holy Spirit plays a crucial role in empowering and guiding us in our mission. In Acts 1:8, Jesus told His disciples, "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you, and you will be my witnesses." The Holy Spirit empowers us to live out our faith, equips us to share the message of Jesus, and guides us in our journey of serving God. He is our helper, comforter, and source of strength as we fulfill our purpose on Earth.

t's important to teach our kids that God has given them life as a special present. They're meant to share God's love with others and to serve Him. So, the things they do and the choices they make should show their love for God and their desire to help and care for others. As they grow, they should understand that their lives have a purpose. And with the help of the Holy Spirit, their purpose is to spread God's love in the world through their actions and kindness. Galatians 5:22-23 speaks of the fruit of the Holy Spirit, which includes love, kindness, and other qualities that can help children fulfill their purpose of showing God's love to others.

Let’s pray. Dear Heavenly Father, we thank you for the purpose and meaning you have given to our lives. Help us to live each day for you, shining your light and spreading your love. May we always remember that whether we live or die, we belong to you. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
